How vetting actually works

We will tell you exactly what we have checked

Four steps, done by a person, not an algorithm. The numbers below are the share of our 57 tutors who have completed each one.

1100%

Email verified

Required to create a profile. Every tutor on the site has a verified email address.

216%

Photo ID checked

An admin records which government photo ID the tutor showed us and the date on it - a profile photo alone is never treated as identity proof.

370%

Qualifications checked

Degrees, teaching registration and subject certificates are reviewed one by one.

439%

Documents on file

Supporting documents are stored with the profile. You can ask a tutor to show you theirs.

What we do not do

We do not run Police checks, vetting, or Children's Act safety checks ourselves, and we do not contact referees - in New Zealand only a Police-authorised agency can request a Police vet, so a tutor can only show us one a school, university or employer already ran on them for another role. When a tutor has shown our team a Ministry of Justice criminal record check or a genuine Police vet, we say which one and record the date - a criminal record check confirms convictions only, a Police vet goes further, and a clear result on either is not a full guarantee (see our FAQ). Some tutors also mention a police check on their own profile - that is what they told us, not something we have independently confirmed, so we do not count it as a verification step. We do not show a "References checked" badge either, because we have never actually checked one.

So we suggest

Hold the first lesson online or somewhere public, ask to see the documents yourself, and sit in if your teenager is comfortable with that. Unverified items stay marked as unverified on the profile - we never round them up.

Kia ora, I'm Bakhtiyar

I'm a Hobsonville-based developer and dad of four. Looking ahead to the NCEA years, I tried the usual tutoring sites – big global marketplaces and local agencies – but couldn't find something NCEA-only, simple, and commission-free.

So I built NCEATutor NZ: a small, NZ-owned platform where tutors keep 100% of their lesson fees, families contact tutors directly, and every profile is checked by a real person before it goes live.

Questions

Before you send a request

What does "verified" actually mean?

It means an admin looked at a document with their own eyes and recorded what it was. Photo ID means an admin recorded which government photo ID the tutor showed us and its date - a profile photo on its own is never treated as identity proof. Qualifications means we read the degree or registration certificate. Anything we have not checked stays visibly unchecked on the profile.

Do you run police checks?

We do not run Police checks or vetting ourselves, and we do not contact referees. When a tutor has shown our team a Ministry of Justice criminal record check or a Police vetting report, we record which one it was and the date we saw it - a criminal record check confirms convictions only, a Police vet goes further, and neither is everything Police may hold (see our FAQ for the difference). Some tutors also mention a police check on their own profile - that is what they have told us, not something we have confirmed. We suggest holding the first lesson online or somewhere public.

What's the difference between a "criminal record check" and a "Police check"?

A Ministry of Justice criminal record check shows convictions only - not charges that didn't result in a conviction, and not other information Police may hold. A Police vet goes further, but only an approved organisation can request one, so a tutor can only show us a vet that a school, university or employer already ran on them for another role. We accept either, we record which one we saw and the date, and we do not run any check ourselves.

Does a clear result mean the tutor has never done anything wrong?

Not necessarily. New Zealand's Clean Slate law can automatically hide older, minor convictions from a standard check after enough time has passed with no reoffending, and the check never shows charges that weren't proven in court. A clear result means no unconcealed convictions were on file on the date we checked - it isn't a full guarantee. Either document is a snapshot of the day it was produced, not a statement about today.

How much does it cost?

Tutors set their own hourly rate and it's shown on the profile before you contact anyone. Sending a request is free, and you're not committed to anything by sending one.

Online or in person?

100% of our tutors offer online lessons and 58% also teach in person. You can filter for either when you search.

What if the tutor is not the right fit?

Nothing is locked in. You arrange lessons directly with the tutor, so if it is not working you can stop and send another request. About 32% of requests have led to a match so far, and we keep going until it does.

How many tutors are on NCEATutor?

57 tutors are listed right now, covering NCEA Levels 1 to 3 and Scholarship, with 165 student requests sent so far. Small, and honest about it.
